About extensions, MCP servers, skills and safety
A piece of software or a set of instructions that gives your AI access to a service: a remote MCP server, a server on your own computer or a skill. With it your AI can get into your books or a webshop, for example.
MCP is an open standard that lets an AI use a service. An MCP server is the software that makes a service, such as your books or a webshop, reachable for your AI. It runs remotely or on your own computer. Most extensions in the catalogue contain one.
A set of instructions your AI reads. Nothing is connected and no server runs: it is a folder of text that your AI picks up when your question calls for it. If a skill also ships scripts, your AI runs them itself.
Yes, and with Claude Code and Codex too. It does depend on your plan: free ChatGPT cannot add a remote MCP server, that takes Plus or higher. Free Claude can add one. The guides have a table that says per AI what works.
Qontex runs no extensions itself and does not see what your AI does with them. The extension acts on your behalf at the service, so only give access to a maker you trust. The extension’s page says who that is: the service itself (official), a company that sells it (commercial) or someone from the community.
